Students, athletes, fans, coaches and members of the Cal U community woke to the news that women’s basketball player Shanice Clark had passed Sunday morning around 4 a.m.
Clark, a 6-foot senior forward from Toronto, Ontario, was reportedly found unresponsive in her apartment on campus early Sunday morning. She was then transported to Monongahela Valley Hospital and was pronounced dead there about an hour after arriving, reports state.
Clark had choked on chewing gum while she was asleep, according to reports from medical personnel.
Cal U Interim President Geraldine M. Jones and Athletic Director Dr. Karen Hjerpe issued the following statement on behalf of the athletic department:
“Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to the family and friends of Shanice Clark. Shanice was a bright student and talented player. Her smile and personality will be missed.”
Clark was redshirting this season but she played in 24 games a year ago and averaged 2.9 points and 2.6 rebounds in 9.0 minutes per game as a reserve. Her best game came in the form of an 11-point, nine-rebound night against Mercyhurst.
Prior to Cal U, Clark had played at Santa Fe College in Gainesville, Florida from 2011-2013. She was a communications major with a focus in radio and television.
