Will all the attention is being paid to the Pitt Panthers football team as they prepare to begin their first season of ACC play, before you know it Jamie Dixon and the Pitt basketball team will be back in action. With that being said, the Panthers released their entire 2013-14 schedule on Thursday. The schedule features home contests against ACC foes in Duke, Syracuse and Penn State and currently features 16 games on national television, a number that could grow as the season inches ... Wild Things win behind Beatty’s 5 RBI night
The Washington Wild Things, combined with a strong start by Dayne Quist and a 5 RBI performance by CJ Beatty, picked up a 7-1 win over the Gateway Grizzlies Wednesday night from CONSOLE Energy Park. Quist pitched 8.0 strong innings, only giving up 1 run on 6 scattered hits. Allowing just two base runners through the first 5. 0 innings, Quist was able to keep the Grizzlies at bay for most of the game. The only run that the Grizzlies picked up was in the 6th after Alex Guthrie singled to start ... Read More
Kennedy, Alonso lift Padres in series finale
The Pittsburgh Pirates had the opportunity to sweep the San Diego Padres in San Diego for the first time since April 29-May 1 of 2003 on Wednesday afternoon. The only thing standing in their way was the brilliant performance by Ian Kennedy. Newly acquired Kennedy showed his best Francisco Liriano impression, playing stopper for the Padres to salvage a game in the three game series against the Pirates at Petco Park. Yonder Alonso supplied all the offense with a sacrifice fly and RBI single to ... Read More
Woke Up in a New Lambo-rghini
The Pirates should turn to Andrew Lambo at first base (Flickr.com/Sports Crazy) With September baseball fast approaching, the Pirates will be moving quickly to improve in all areas of need. While much attention has been focused on the production of Pirates right fielders this summer (or lack thereof), there seems to be a glaring weakness that continues to be overlooked. The first base production for the Bucs this year has not been good. While the platoon of Gaby Sanchez (left handers) and ... Read More
Pirates select Pie’s contract
With the recent hand injury to Starling Marte, the Pirates decided to select the contract of outfielder Felix Pie from Class AAA Indianapolis. Reliever Ryan Reid, who was recalled on Monday to give the taxing bullpen an extra arm, was optioned to Indianapolis. To make room for Pie on the 40-man roster, Pittsburgh transferred starting pitcher Wandy Rodriguez from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list. Pie, which is making his Pirates’ debut tonight in San Diego, will bat first and play left ... Read More
Division II Football Preview: Gannon
The Gannon Knights had a disappointing 2012 season, posting a 3-8 record. Two of those three wins came in two of the last three games, giving the Knights some hope for the 2013 season. Offensively, nine starters are returning. Defensively, six starters are returning. The Knights will go into battle with a record-setting young quaterback and his three favorite targets on offense and a strong defensive back who led the team in tackles. Here's a look at what to expect from the Knights in ... Read More
Growing Pains for the Steelers
Maurkice Pouncey and the rest of the Steelers' offensive line have a lot of work to do (Flickr.com/Jeff Bryk) Preseason games are for teammates to get used to one another and get acclimated with the system. The panic button for me doesn't get hit until Week Six of the regular season. So as I've said in a previous article, if the Steelers are going to slump or struggle, the time to do it is now. The Pittsburgh Steelers are no different than any other team in NFL, except of course, for all ... Read More
An Ode to The Great One
It is crazy to think that Roberto Clemente would have only been 79 years young this week. With his playing career and life having ended 41 years ago, Clemente is a distant memory of a Golden Age of baseball in Pittsburgh. With his birthday this past week, many Yinzers reflected on the life and career of The Great One. Clemente was born in Carolina, Puerto Rico in 1934. He was an avid fan of baseball in his youth, listening to a combination of baseball games and static on his radio, that ... Read More
Running back Le’Veon Bell has Lisfranc injury, surgery is a possibility
As if injuries aren't already bad enough for the Steelers, they suffered yet another hit to the team this afternoon. Rookie running back Le'Veon Bell is believed to have suffered a Lisfranc injury during Monday nights game against the Washington Redskins. While staying healthy has been something the Steelers have had trouble doing this past offseason, and current preseason, the loss of Bell might be the biggest one. He missed the team's first preseason game against the Giants due to a left ... Read More
Barrage of triples helps Pirates increase division lead
Last night was an ideal example of a dream night for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Before their game in San Diego started, the Pirates already witnessed the Reds fall victim to the Diamondbacks and the Cardinals were on the cusp of losing to the Brewers. All the Buccos needed to do was take care of business at Petco Park to extend their division lead, and that they did. Pedro Alvarez, Andrew McCutchen and Josh Harrison each produced run scoring triples to propel the Pirates to an 8-1 drubbing of the ... Read More
