Charlie Morton put together his strongest start since the 2nd of July, but the Pirate bullpen imploded allowing the Marlins to take the first game of the eight-game homestand 6-3 on Tuesday night. Morton went seven strong innings after working out of two jams. With runners on first and second with one out in the second, Morton induced a fly out and a ground out to end the inning. He worked out of another jam in the fourth after the Marlins tied things at one. With runners on the corners, ... Read More

Andrew McCutchen spoke prior to the Pirates series-opener against the Marlins about the injury he sustained in the final game of the series at Arizona. It was reported on Monday that McCutchen sustained a serious oblique injury that could have kept him from the field for three to four weeks, but that was not the case as the actual injury McCutchen sustained while taking a swing in the seventh inning was "an avulsion fracture involving the costochondral cartilage of the left 11th rib." An ... Read More

Pirates must sink or swim with Pedro Alvarez
With the Pittsburgh Pirates’ season on the brink after news came out that reigning National League MVP Andrew McCutchen is heading to the disabled list, Pirates’ manager Clint Hurdle has to find a way to get by for the next month and keep the team in the playoff chase. There are many opinions out there on what to do to during the next month, but for Hurdle and his staff, the answer should be a simple one. Ride Pedro Alvarez. Now that isn’t the answer that many Pirates’ fans want to ... Read More
Depth at safety a strength for Steelers
As the Steelers enter their second full week of training camp, there are a number of important questions to be answered after consecutive 8-8 seasons. One of the biggest questions will be whether or not the Steelers have enough depth at cornerback, a topic I discussed for PSN a couple of weeks back. Cornerback depth behind the top three of Ike Taylor, Cortez Allen and William Gay is still a hot topic at camp, but it's the outstanding depth at safety that might help ease some of those concerns ... Tomlin Releases First Depth Chart
On Sunday, less than a week in advance of the preseason opener at the New York Giants, Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin released the team's initial depth chart. Established veterans at various positions such as quarterback, tight end, cornerback and safety were, of course, not surprisingly slotted into starting roles, but a handful of names and decisions made at this point in training camp were of note. Beginning with the offense and barring any injuries in preseason, QB Ben ... Read More
McCutchen expected to go to the 15-day DL.
According to Ron Cook of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Andrew McCutchen will be placed on the 15-day DL after "what might be a significant oblique injury" in yesterday's 10-inning loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks. McCutchen left in considerable pain after his sacrifice fly in the eighth inning, and had to be helped to the clubhouse by teammates. Reports are that McCutchen could miss upwards of a month with the injury, which would be devastating news to the Pirates, who are 1.5 games out of first ... Read More
