Matt Sergey couldn't hold on to his solid 2.53 ERA going into Friday as he allowed seven runs over 6.1 innings as the Washington Wild Things were shut out by the Traverse City Beach Bums 7-0 at Consol Energy Park. Sergey (1-3) found trouble from the start allowing back-to-back one out hits in the first. He then got a sacrifice fly for the second out, but again surrendered another single and a three-run home run to put Washington into an early hole. Things didn't improve much in the second ... Pirates win streak hits four with victory over Braves
The Pittsburgh Pirates offense had 12 hits in a series opening 10-8 victory against the Atlanta Braves. Charlie Morton [3-0] did just enough to earn a victory against his former team, throwing five innings allowing four runs [three earned]. Morton also walked three batters and struck out one on 82 pitches, 50 of which were for strikes. Morton once again displayed his ground ball ability as the Braves had nine ground ball outs and two fly balls. The Braves scored two runs in the first ... Read More
Lawrence Timmons open to idea of retiring a Steeler
Until lately, whether it because of performance or salary cap issues, the Pittsburgh Steelers had a knack of knowing when to cut ties with veterans getting up there in age. One guy that they will be forced to make a tough call in the next couple of years will be inside linebacker Lawrence Timmons. Even though he is still playing at a very high level, Timmons has a couple of extremely high cap hits coming up of $12.6 million in 2015 and $11.8 million in 2016. That alone may force the ... Wild Things fall in extras
The Wild Things received a strong start from starter Tim Flight, but couldn't get him any run support as the Wild Things fell to the Rockford Aviators 4-3 in thirteen innings to drop the three-game series on Thursday night at Consol Energy Park. Flight struggled out of the gate allowing four hits and three walks through three innings, but only conceded two runs, which would be the only damage Rockford could do to him in his seven innings of work. "Other than the first few innings, Timmy ... Read More
Lemieux, Pittsburgh have an unbreakable bond
This may be a bold statement, but I’m going to make it anyway. There is no organization in all of sports with the history and success of the Pittsburgh Penguins that owes it all to one man. Obviously, that man is Mario Lemieux. That’s why when the news breaking late on Wednesday that Lemieux, along with business partner Ron Burkle, was exploring the possibility of selling his stake in the team, sentiments were strong in the Steel City. It’s not that there is a fear of the team leaving, ... Read More
Cervelli is no Martin, but still quality find for Pirates
It’s another year and another former New York Yankee catcher is having success with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Almost feels like clockwork at this point. First it was signing Russell Martin in 2013, and then last year it was acquiring Chris Stewart for cash. This year, it was trading for Francisco Cervelli. The 29-year-old has been a quality backstop for the Pirates and is only costing the team $987,500 this year. But so far this year, how does Cervelli stack up against Martin, who signed ... Read More
Riverhounds have chance to show off MLS aspirations
Not very long ago, it was unsure if the Pittsburgh Riverhounds would even stay in business. A disastrous start to their 2014 season left the team on the outside looking in come playoff time. Then, it got worse. In November, the team declared for Chapter-11 bankruptcy. While this has been considered a strategic move, struggling both on and off the field gave people little incentive to invest their time and money into Riverhounds Soccer. Fast forward to the summer of 2015, and the ... Read More
Penguins offseason: Could Comeau be back in Pittsburgh?
The Pittsburgh Penguins signed Blake Comeau as a free agent last summer without much fanfare. He was a 28-year-old veteran that had spent the previous two seasons playing a fourth line role, so the assumption was that he would wind up in the same role with the Penguins, possibly pushing Craig Adams for playing time and working on the penalty kill. He did have a past history of working as a top six scorer, but that was back in his early years with the New York Islanders. His recent ... Read More
Wild Things split doubleheader
The Washington Wild Things began a six-game homestand with a double header split with the Rockford Aviators on Wednesday night as they walked-off in extras in game one before blowing a late-inning lead in the second. Game 1 The Wild Things (8-8) got a strong pitching performance from Luke Wilkins, but needed a walk-off in extras to defeat the Aviators 2-1. Wilkins allowed one run over six innings of six-hit ball while walking one and striking out four. He experienced trouble in the second ... Read More
Pirates secure series sweep
It took a while for Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop Jordy Mercer to hit his first home run of the season, however his second came in Wednesday's 5-2 victory over the San Francisco Giants and represented the winning run. This is the first Pirates sweep in San Francisco since May 14-16 2004 and the third sweep in the past four series. The Pirates have won 11 of their past 13 games and at 29-24 are a season best five games above .500. As was the case in the first two games, it was the Giants who ... Read More
