The few Pittsburgh Riverhounds fans that made their way to Highmark Stadium last night were severely disappointed in their club’s performance. The Riverhounds, who faced the Lansdowne Bhoys FC amatuer team out of New York, participated in the second round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. However, their Cup days ended last night with a 2-0 defeat at the hands of LBFC. The Bhoys had their first goal scored in the 10’ minute off a Craig Purcell header. The goal came from a free kick for the ... Read More

Replacing Boyd’s production key question for Pitt offense
It requires a small village to fill the footsteps of a giant. To replace star receiver, and newly minted Cincinnati Bengal Tyler Boyd, strength in numbers will be the Pitt Panthers primary concern. No one player on the current roster can be expected to take his place, but if a hoard of young Panthers step up, the offense as a whole should be able to shoulder the arduous burden. Boyd’s absence leaves a gaping 91-catch void in the receiving game, and an even larger vacancy as Pitt’s most ... Read More

The Penn State Nittany Lions baseball team began its 2016 campaign in Cuba, but as it ends the regular season, the team will be back home in familiar digs in Medlar Field at Lubrano Park for a three-game series against Big Ten-foe Iowa. Iowa will be a pivotal match-up for head coach Rob Cooper’s Nittany Lions, which control their postseason destiny. Report: Michael Vick won’t be on Steelers’ roster for 2016 season

According to Bob Labriola of steelers.com, Ben Roethlisberger, Bruce Gradkowski, Landry Jones and Dustin Vaughan will be the team's quarterbacks going into training camp. The move doesn’t come as much of a shock. On May 2, the Steelers re-signed veteran quarterback Gradkowski, who will serve as Roethlisberger's backup, to a one-year extension. With two veteran quarterbacks already ... Read More
Column: It’s time for Arquimedes Caminero to be DFA’d
After an unsettling ninth inning, one thing became clear in the Pittsburgh Pirates' 3-1 loss Wednesday night to the Atlanta Braves: Arquimedes Caminero needs to be DFA'd. This isn't an emotional reaction, it's one that has been building. Caminero had a great season last year, but, this season, his pitches are finishing on more of a straight angle, and his quicker pace of play may have created a mental block. And when a player struggles for an extended period of time, bad habits can be hard ... Read More
Penguins take 2-1 series lead vs. Lightning behind Crosby, third line
It looks like Sidney Crosby is back. After struggling early in the playoffs, Crosby netted his second goal in as many games and helped lead the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 4-2 win Wednesday night against the Tampa Bay Lightning. With the win, the Penguins took a 2-1 series lead in the Eastern Conference Finals. The first period was pretty even (the Penguins had 10 shots on goal to the Lightning's 12), but nothing went in, keeping the game locked in a defensive battle. The second period was ... Read More

Matt Joyce thriving off bench for Pirates
Matt Joyce had a rare start Monday. He made it count. The Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder had three hits, three RBIs and scored twice. And his outing in the Pirates' win against the Atlanta Braves was capped when Joyce launched a home run into the right field bleachers in the bottom of the seventh inning. It was only his sixth start of the season, yet, he's made his presence felt. In mostly a pinch-hitting role, Joyce has a .372/.500/.767 line this season. His five home runs are ... Read More
COLUMN: Riverhounds might need to switch up defense
Last Saturday, the Pittsburgh Riverhounds made the decision to switch up the goalkeeper position. The Riverhounds didn’t get a win out of it, but things look promising with Mauricio Vargas in goal. However, goalkeeper might not be the only position that needs changing — the defense might, too. The Riverhounds can’t solely depend on their goalkeeper for a clean sheet. As the back line, the defense plays a major role to help Vargas (or even Hunter Gilstrap, depending on who head ... Read More
