Once every four years, respective sports hold a competition to find out who the best of the best is throughout the world. The first one that comes to mind, of course, would be the Summer and Winter Olympics respectively. To a lesser degree - depending on who you speak to - is the World Cup which pits the best of the best that soccer has to offer against each other over a month long tournament. While baseball is America's oldest game, it's also the newest to the four-year annual ... Read More

Opportunity is knocking on the door of Pitt’s Isaac Bennett and Malcolm Crockett
It is always said that opportunities don't come that often, but when they do you have to be ready to take advantage of them. That's the case for Pitt running backs Isaac Bennett (junior) and Malcolm Crockett (redshirt sophomore), who suddenly have been presented with a golden opportunity to emerge as the feature back in Paul Chryst's offense. With the transfer of Rushel Shell, Bennett and Crockett have risen to No.1 and 2 on the current Panthers' depth chart as spring practice ... Read More
Should Steelers take a chance on Tyrann Mathieu?
We all know that the Steelers usually stray away from those players that have red flags, and have been in prior trouble, but there is a player in this year’s draft that I think the Steelers should take a look at. Tyrann Mathieu is a player who has had his past troubles, but seems to be turning things around. You don’t have to go back very far to the last time the Steelers took a player with a red flag. Last year they took offensive tackle Mike Adams out of Ohio State who had some issues out ... Read More
Snedden’s Take: Play Ball! 2013 Pittsburgh Pirates Over/Under Edition
The image I chose for this years Pirates Over/Under article doesn’t seem to fit the title, at least until you realize who is smiling back at you from that March 1978 Sports Illustrated cover. The handsome young man under that head of jet black hair is none other than the Commander of this Pirates Ship – Manager Clint Hurdle. The optimism that surrounded the 20-year-old Kansas City Royals rookie that spring was not unlike the unbridled enthusiasm that looms over the upcoming 2013 Pittsburgh ... Read More
Sabres snap Pittsburgh’s win streak at fifteen games
The Pittsburgh Penguins won games when Paul Martin and Kris Letang went down with injuries. They slugged through close battles when Evgeni Malkin was out, and they found a way to shutout back to back opponents without the help of Marc-Andre Fleury. But in their first full game without Sidney Crosby, the Penguins came out flat and couldn't come back from a three goal deficit. The Buffalo Sabres scored four goals in the first two periods and cruised to a 4-1 victory over the Penguins to ... Read More
Steven Adams Declares for 2013 NBA Draft
When he was recruited to come to Pitt, many expected Steven Adams to be a one-and-done player. Despite a less than spectacular freshman campaign, that's become a reality. According to a University of Pittsburgh press release, Adams announced on Tuesday that he will make himself available for the 2013 NBA Draft. Adams intends to sign with an agent, which means he can't change his mind and return to school. “In discussing options with my family and Coach Dixon, I feel that it is in my ... Read More
Pitt Panthers running back options with Shell out
W.P.I.A.L. legend, and now former Pitt running back Rushel Shell is transferring from the University of Pittsburgh. He is leaving his hometown team, and reports are saying he is looking to move out west to a school in either Arizona or California. A move that just doesn’t make sense with him having two children that he would have to leave to go out there, and not to mention the fact that he was basically the guaranteed starter coming into the 2013 season. Shell had a good campaign as a ... Read More
Jeff Locke thankful for making Opening Day roster
PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Ever since Jeff Locke was little, his dream was to be a Major League baseball player. That came true on September 10, 2011 against the Miami Marlins when the left-hander took the mound for the Pirates and allowed three runs over five innings. It took Locke 10 big league starts over parts of two seasons and a combined 67.2 frames before he was able to notch his first Major League win on October 1, 2012 against his former club, the Atlanta Braves, who drafted the southpaw out of ... Rushel Shell to transfer from Pitt
The Rushel Shell saga seems to have come to a swift end and it is bad news for the Pitt Panthers football team. According to Jerry DiPaola of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Shell told Panthers head coach Paul Chryst he will transfer from the university, ending his stay with the team after one season. Shell was absent from spring practice last week amid rumors of potential transfer and later in the week Chryst issued a statement that Shell was taking time away from football to sort out ... Slippery Rock announces 2013 football schedule
Slippery Rock's head coach George Mihalik released the 2013 football schedule this morning. The schedule presents a tough road ahead for The Rock, as six of their games are against opponents who finished the 2012 season with a winning record, and three of those teams competed in the NCAA DII playoffs. Among those teams are PSAC Champion and Super Region One runner-up IUP, Shippensburg, and Bloomsburg. All three teams won at least 10 games last season, with IUP and Shippensburg winning ... Read More
