Johnston to coach while mourning
Penguins head coach Mike Johnston will be coaching this afternoon with a heavy heart, as he deals with the loss of his mother Sheila Johnston, who passed away on Friday in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Mrs. Johnston was 81 years old. Coach Johnston is expected to coach both of the team’s games this weekend before returning to Canada for the funeral on Tuesday. Wydo sparkles in pro debut
Former Robert Morris captain Cody Wydo made his professional debut with the Wheeling Nailers on Friday night, and he did it in style. Wydo scored a goal and an assist to lead the Nailers to a 2-1 victory over the Fort Wayne Komets. Several RMU students and a large group of his teammates made the 60-mile trip to Wheeling to cheer him on and Wydo, the school’s all-time leading scorer and a Hobey Baker finalist, didn’t disappoint. Strong first half propels Cal (Pa.) to D2 Women’s National Championship
California (Pa.) built a strong lead in the first half and held on to claim the Division II Women's National Championship with an 86-69 victory over Cal Baptist Friday night. Jeff Locke pitched 5.2 innings as the Pittsburgh Pirates won a rain-shortened game 4-2 Friday against the Minnesota Twins. The game was called due to rain in the bottom of the eighth inning. Locke is now 1-1 on the season and lowered his ERA from 9.00 to 6.59. He allowed: eight hits, two runs, walked three and struck out two batters. Worley continues to make starting case; Pirates lose
Vance Worley's six-inning start had some peaks and valleys in the Pirates 7-5 loss to the Atlanta Braves Thursday. Worley threw six innings allowing seven hits, five runs and striking out three batters. The vast majority of the damage came in the first inning in which the Braves scored five runs.
