The Penguins have one final chance in 2014 to end their current losing streak, and shake off some of the last few weeks. Four Penguins are poised to return to the lineup tonight, as forwards Beau Bennett and Craig Adams and defenseman Christian Ehrhoff have been removed from the injured reserve, and Thomas ... Getting to the quarterback will be key to Steelers-Ravens grudge match
Heading into Saturday night's playoff contest, it would be easy to look at a number of factors that will determine the outcome in the latest edition of the Pittsburgh Steelers-Baltimore Ravens playoff grudge match. Much of the talk has understandably revolved around the availability of Le'Veon Bell, who is nursing a knee injury that is likely to keep him from playing Saturday night. After all, we are talking about an All-Pro running back and Steelers’ MVP, and it's fair to assume that Josh ... Read More
Josh Harris ready for possible opportunity of a lifetime vs. Ravens
Sometimes all an athlete needs is an opportunity. For Pittsburgh Steelers rookie running back Josh Harris, he very well could get the opportunity of a lifetime as the undrafted rookie likely will get his first NFL start and see his most action as a professional when the Steelers play host to the Baltimore Ravens Saturday night at Heinz Field in the opening round of the NFL Playoffs. That opportunity is something that Harris relishes. “You hate to be in this situation because a teammate ... Read More
Colgate beats RMU to earn Three Rivers Classic title
The Colgate Raiders are the 2014 Three Rivers Classic champions after defeating the Robert Morris Colonials by a resounding 6-1 margin at Consol Energy Center on Tuesday. The Colgate offense overpowered the Robert Morris defenders all game long, and the Raiders were able to keep the Colonials own high-powered attack in check. “When you walk by [Mario Lemieux's] 66 and pictures of Stanley Cup champions, it’s very motivational,” said Colgate head coach Don Vaughn. “It really is, that’s where ... Pitt extends win streak to six with win over Florida Gulf Coast
Two years ago, the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles were the darlings of the NCAA Tournament. Tuesday night, Jamie Dixon’s Pitt Panthers made sure that they wouldn’t become the Eagles next upset victim. The Panthers used a balanced offensive attack and cruised to a sixth consecutive victory, defeating a very sloppy Florida Gulf Coast team 71-54 for Pitt’s 200th win all-time at the Petersen Events Center. The win was the second convincing one in a row for the Panthers, who begin ACC play on Saturday ... Read More
Western Michigan hands Penn State second defeat of Three Rivers Classic
The Western Michigan Broncos overcame yesterday’s semifinal loss and defeated the Penn State Nittany Lions 4-1 in today’s consolation game of the Three Rivers Classic at Consol Energy Center. This is Penn State’s third time playing in the classic, and their first time coming in 4th place, despite getting another injured player, junior defenseman Connor Varley, back from injury after adding fellow junior Zach Saar the night before. “We just didn't seem to have the same compete level that we've ... Steelers sign RB Ben Tate
With the speculation running wild all Tuesday morning surrounding the possibility that the Pittsburgh Steelers were looking to sign running back Ben Tate, Tuesday afternoon they made it official. The team interviewed and worked out Tate earlier in the day and made the decision to sign the 26-year old. That also leads to the possibility that Le’Veon Bell will indeed be inactive Saturday night when the Steelers host the Baltimore Ravens. Tate was considered the top free agent running back ... Shaler’s Zac Lynch, RMU on cusp of Three Rivers Classic title
As the clock ticked down under a minute in Robert Morris’ 4-2 victory over rival Penn State in Monday night’s Three Rivers Classic semifinal, it was Shaler native Zac Lynch that turned the lights out with an empty-net goal. With his family in the stands, scoring in Consol Energy Center is something Lynch could get accustomed to. He also scored in last year’s tournament. “There’s some different feelings you get, being in an NHL arena with a bigger crowd,” Lynch said. “But every game, you’re ... Read More
Ben Tate expected to be signed by Steelers
With running back Le’Veon Bell’s status for Saturday night against the Baltimore Ravens not looking good, the Pittsburgh Steelers look to be taking steps to add depth at the position. According to several reports, the team will interview and workout Ben Tate on Tuesday and if all goes well are expected to sign the 26-year old. Tate was considered the top free agent running back this March after backing up Arian Foster in Houston for a few years. That led to him signing with the ... Read More
2014 Pittsburgh Sporting News Athlete of the Year: Josh Harrison
What a year it’s been for Pittsburgh sports. For the first time since 1992, the Pirates, Penguins and Steelers were all in the playoffs during the same calendar year. The three teams could make cases for having the best overall player in their respective sports, and the future looks bright for all of them. At the college ranks, Pitt had another underwhelming season and underwent another coaching change, but James Conner and Tyler Boyd continued to become household names. Penn State had its ... Read More
